In Memoriam: Maggie Estep, Poetry Slam Diva Dies Of A Broken Heart – Virago Magazine
Maggie Estep‘s last blog entry was entitled “Stripers, Sluts and Umlauts” and posted about a week before she died of a heart attack at fifty in Hudson, NY. The subject was “lives, struggles and loves.” The stuff she always wrote, spoke and sang about. The poetic Estep made her mark in the mid-nineties performing at spoken-word festivals like Free Your Mind with Henry Rollins and Jim Carroll and went on to release an album “No More Mr. Nice Girl.” She hit the circuit in ’94 making the rounds at Lollapalooza and Woodstock. After her stint as the darling of MTV as the poetry slam diva, Estep would go on to become a novelist. Her work includes mysteries, erotica and memoir. At the time of her death she was working on The Story of Giants.
