Construct: Indie Game Development

Indie game development is a major business. Apps are constantly being uploaded to popular shareware websites like Google Play, Apple iStore, and Steam. Consumers invest large amounts of time and money into these products. In turn, a few lucky developers earn enough cash to support new projects, buy a new car, and have the option to peacefully retire (side note: “Flappy Bird” was making $50,000 per day).

Consequently, the video game industry is going through a seismic shift. Triple-A publishers like EA and Bethesda are trying to engage players in the mobile market. On the other hand, start-up companies and nerdy kids—such as myself—dream of jumping into the development business and hitting pixelated gold.

However, learning to craft a video game can seem scary. Binary numbers and code languages float around virtual reality, and normal people just can’t understand them. Looking into a game’s core files is a daunting task, and it might cause nightmares. So, people just leave the programming up to the professionals.

Those nightmares are quickly becoming rainbow dreams. Software companies are giving novice programmers the tools to ease themselves into the industry and, with a bit of luck, create the next big app.

Scirra Ltd. was established in 2011 by Ashley and Thomas Gullen. The team of programmers created Construct, a program which eliminates coding from game creation. Instead of forcing users to learn a computer programming language, Construct displays a simple drag-and-drop system, which allows for versatile design without using complex algorithms. Users can easily download the latest version of the program and immediately create a wide variety of games for nearly any major platform.

Construct has met with success. Scirra hosts a strong community of users, all of whom design games and are willing to help new artists as well. Many popular games were created with Construct, including “Sawbucks” and “The Esfarelante.”

Developing video games is no longer a difficult task. With the rise of independent games, companies like Scirra are taking advantage of people’s desires to create games of their own. Instead of taking years to master a specific language, young designers can simply download Construct and start right away.  The indie market is crafting the way that money is made with virtual reality, and Construct is helping people join this exciting revolution.
